This site is said to be the remains of an office, military facility, and ceremonial center built about 1,200 years ago in the early Heian period, when the central government was advancing the unification of this region.
However, it is also a site full of mysteries, as it is not mentioned in old documents and its historical name has yet to be identified.
The Hottanosaku Ruins are surrounded by about 3.6 km of wooden fencing, and the restored outer enclosure south gate stands 9.7 m high, creating a grand scale. Festivals are also held on the grounds in summer and winter.
At the general information center, you can learn about the Hottanosaku Ruins through video presentations with anime-style animations. Please stop by before your walk.
You can also enjoy a guided historical walk by reservation.
In the Mamayama area in the western part of the site, there is the Former Ikeda Residence Garden, Hotta Branch Garden, which is popular in autumn for its beautiful fall colors.
